Regione Toscana presented the IDEAL-EU project at the electronic Town Meeting that took place in Florence on April 25 of 2009.
The Town Meeting was planned by the Democracy Biennale that is organized in Turin, and shared by the Florence municipality.
Regione
Toscana provided the know how and the venue for the event. The
participants discussed about the idea of introducing a law on
biological testament and on the provision that the law should contain.
The goal was to promote citizens active participation as they are
seated around tables of ten people and helped in the debate by
facilitators that moderate the discussion. The participants were able
also to express their individual ideas through an electronic polling
system on different options regarding the discussed subjects.
After the end of the day each participant was consigned a report that contained the results of the televote.
The
event was held in Florence with 100 participants and in Turin with 250
participants. The two venues where connected through a videoconference
and streaming communication system. The deliberative democracy
experiment concerned the theme of biological testament, a very relative
and contemporary topic, as the Italian Parliament has been discussing
about passing a new law about this subject.
A dossier was compiled from the Town
meeting results and will be delivered to the President of the Italian
Republic Giorgio Napolitano.
